Video: Into the mouth of hell

Filmed 8 March 2010

We went for a hike up Ijen volcano in Eastern Java (not far from Bali) and found all these superhuman guys lugging 100kg loads of sulphur out of the the crater. I couldn't lift a pair of baskets a single centimetre off the ground!

The volcano is dangerous too, prone to nasty belches and explosions from time to time. Plus the daily intake of sulphurous fumes causes a lot of health problems.

This has to be one of the hardest jobs in the world. Even so, they are mostly a friendly bunch. If you go, take money and biscuits to reward them for your pictures.
